A heated debate has erupted between Welsh rugby fans and officials over the Welsh Rugby Union's (WRU) proposal to reduce the number of professional teams. The WRU's chair, Richard Collier-Keywood, claims to have the backing of fans and players, despite a poll revealing that 90% of Scarlets supporters oppose the plan. Collier-Keywood argues that the rugby system in Wales was in dire need of reform before his leadership, citing the widespread acknowledgment of its flaws. However, fan representatives from the Scarlets and Dragons Supporters' Clubs have refuted this, stating that there is no appetite for mergers or team changes. The WRU's plan involves scrapping the Ospreys, as the region's owners are the preferred bidder for Cardiff, a city the WRU has owned since the club's administration. This decision is driven by the WRU's financial struggles, with debts requiring refinancing. Collier-Keywood and WRU CEO Abi Tierney assert that cutting one team is the most viable option to improve resources and focus on Welsh players, despite employing non-Welsh players. The controversy intensifies as Central Glamorgan Rugby Union seeks to hold a vote of no confidence in Collier-Keywood, requiring support from 30 clubs.
