Imagine a celestial memorial, a unique and affordable way to honor loved ones. Space Beyond, a visionary startup, is set to revolutionize the concept of space burials. With a mission to send 1,000 people's ashes into orbit, they're offering an extraordinary and accessible tribute. But here's where it gets intriguing: this idea was born under the stars, sparked by Ryan Mitchell's curiosity while camping. A manufacturing engineer with a space-shuttle background, Mitchell witnessed the democratization of space access, thanks to companies like Blue Origin and SpaceX. It was during a family ash-spreading ceremony that the idea truly took flight. "How could I do this better?" he wondered, and thus, Space Beyond was born.
The 'Ashes to Space' program utilizes CubeSats, miniature cube-shaped satellites, to carry out this ambitious mission. On Thursday, Space Beyond announced a significant partnership with Arrow Science and Technology, securing a launch services agreement for a SpaceX Falcon 9 rideshare mission in October 2027. This collaboration marks a significant step towards making space memorials a reality.
While the concept of sending ashes to space isn't novel, Space Beyond's approach is revolutionary. They're offering this service at an incredibly affordable price, starting at just $249, a fraction of the typical cost. Mitchell attributes this accessibility to the rideshare model, which has opened up new avenues for small-scale commercial missions.
But Space Beyond's mission goes beyond just affordability. Mitchell, a bootstrapped entrepreneur, isn't driven by the desire for big returns. "I'm not looking to take over the world, or make a billion dollars," he asserts. Instead, he aims to provide an innovative and meaningful memorial service.
However, there are limitations. Customers can only send about one gram of ashes, a constraint imposed by the CubeSat format and the weight considerations of launch providers like SpaceX. Additionally, the CubeSat's orbit will only last for about five years, meaning this memorial won't be eternal.
But Mitchell sees benefits in this approach. The CubeSat will be in a sun-synchronous orbit, at a high altitude of around 550 kilometers, allowing it to cover the entire globe. Customers can track its path, knowing when it passes over their homes. And when the five years are up, the CubeSat and the ashes will meet their end, burning up in the Earth's atmosphere, a symbolic closure.
Space Beyond also ensures safety, refraining from physically spreading ashes in space, a potential nightmare scenario due to the risk of creating debris clouds.
Mitchell's journey is a testament to his passion. He explored various ideas, from launch directing to bartending, but this concept kept drawing him back. "I tried to talk myself out of it," he admits, "but every time I analyzed it, it made sense."
